What is Fetească Regală?

Fetească Regală, translated from Romanian as “royal maiden” or “princess,” is a white wine grape variety belonging to the Vitis vinifera species. It was first cultivated in the 1920s in the village of Danes (near Sighișoara, Transylvania, Romania).

History of origin

The variety arose naturally as a result of crossing the Fetească Albă and Grasă de Cotnari varieties. It was previously believed that the second parent was Francușa, but recent research confirms the combination with Grasă.

According to legend, the variety was named “royal” after King Ferdinand I tasted the wine at an exhibition in Bucharest and suggested naming it Fetească Regală.

Regions where Fetească Regală is grown

Fetească Regală is one of the most common varieties in Romania, occupying about 12,000–13,000 hectares. It is actively cultivated in the following regions:

  • Transylvania
  • Republic of Moldova
  • Crișana
  • Banat
  • Muntenia

Outside Romania, the variety is also grown in Moldova, Slovakia, Hungary, Bulgaria, Austria, and even in certain regions of Ukraine.

Agronomic characteristics

  • The bush is medium-sized, with cylindrical-conical clusters.
  • The berries are yellow-green, medium in size.
  • The flowers are hermaphroditic, and the variety is self-fertile.
  • Moderately resistant to frost.
  • Susceptible to mildew and gray rot, requires control of humidity and ventilation in the vineyard.

Thanks to its plasticity and adaptability to different terroirs, Fetească Regală is well suited for both industrial and craft winemaking.
