El Palacio de Hierro is a chain of upscale department stores in Mexico, founded in 1891 by the French. It is considered the first department store chain in the country and a symbol of modernity for many Mexicans. The chain currently has 19 stores, including a flagship store in Mexico City’s Polanco neighborhood, which was completely renovated and opened in 2016 after an extensive $300 million renovation.

History and development

  • Founding: El Palacio de Hierro was founded in 1891, inspired by the Parisian department store Le Bon Marché. The store was originally built of iron and steel, making it an architectural landmark.
  • Fire and rebuilding: In 1914, the original building burned down and a new one was not opened until 1921, designed in the French Art Nouveau style.
  • Modern changes: In 2016, the flagship store in Polanco was modernized, increasing its floor space to 55,248 square meters, making it the largest department store in Latin America.

This department store chain continues to be an important part of Mexican shopping culture, combining tradition with modern trends.
